Usability
Poor usability leads to irritation and fatigue and it has an adverse impact on the usage experience. In an on-line shopping web site, it can lead to loss of revenues. Poor usability in business applications leads to increased help desk costs. On the other hand, better usability makes our usage experience more fun and can increase productivity. A highly usable on-line shopping web site tempts repeat visits, builds customer loyalty, and increases its revenue-earning potential.

SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH: Usability Usability S. Ketharaman - February 15, 2004 Read Comments Introduction There have been several reasons given over the years to explain the success of Microsoft s software products. Rarely has usability featured in these discussions. Many of us would recall how painful it was to draw a table in WordStar or WordPerfect . Microsoft Word made it simple, intuitive and fun to draw tables. The same goes for text formatting, mail merge, envelope printing, and so on. Extra wide screens in many software

SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH: What is SRFM? What is SRFM? Blake Johnson - April 23, 2004 Read Comments Introduction The planning, execution and partner collaboration processes of nearly all companies today are driven by a plan , itself typically part forecast, part performance target. Together, the plan and these core processes are at the heart of almost everything a company does—from MRP output, to commitments to customers and suppliers, to internal performance targets and the bonuses that depend on them, to the financial

RFID ... For Customers?
Recently I spoke at the National Retail Federation in the center of retail: New York City! The big buzz this year, no surprise, was about RFID.

SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH: to be given a small sliver of time to talk about this at such a huge and buzzing conference. There are a bunch of misconceptions about RFID in retail that were front and center in our discussion—poor ROI, reluctant consumers, over investing, overly well-honed processes—instead of attacking the huge delta of lost sales and waste still in the retail supply chain. Replenishment—Making it Smart First, I want to take issue with the whole concept of POS, telling the whole story about replenishment. I

The Power of One
The typical mid-market company that has roughly $350 million in annual revenue, has not fully automated its business processes, and would gladly give up its legacy systems if everything could work from one server, and give the executives the information they need in the process. Another opinion in the dilemma - the one-stop shop versus best-of breed concept.

SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH: The Power of One The Power of One Brion Schweers - August 27, 2003 Read Comments Introduction So many articles today discuss the capabilities of integration services and their ability to tie together information from multiple disparate systems. In the marketplace there are stand-alone products, provided by companies like Tibco and Vitria that perform these services, and it seems that all of the major ERP vendors now have an integration story of their own. The focus on integration stems from the fact that

The ERP Ecosystem
Three major parties (vendors, consulting services, and adopting organizations) are identified in the ERP ecosystem, in which different parties need different key success factors. This article also discusses some challenges that may have an impact on the ERP ecosystem.

SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH: longer limited to a small pool of professionals. Following the commoditization of IT and standardization of business processes, the halo of ERP may fade out if the industry can t add new elements to it. The prosperity of business intelligence (BI) is a recent example that ERP is moving with market needs. Generally speaking, as long as the industry can always stay on the edge of using IT for better business operation and performance, this ecosystem will exist; but one has to be aware that everything has a

The Store of the Future
The big hit of the National Retail Federation show was the Metro Group's Store of the Future. The budget for this extravaganza - it appears to have been underwritten by some of the biggest technology firms in the world.

SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH: salesbut over time. The smallsmartfast progression will allow the store, through PDAs or some kind of loyalty card, to id the shopper as soon as they arrive, analyzing what s there for them—upgrades, matching socks, new offerings that fit in with the profile of the shopper.
